Remember the two parties in Dirty Dancing?

There was the upstairs one.  Prim and proper. Overly lit.   A well executed, but dull, house band.   Nice glassware.  Fancy shit everywhere.

Downstairs, there was another party. The secret, grimy one.  The staff of the resort had their own private shindig.  It was bumpin.  Sexy.  I’d like to forget Patrick Swayze (god rest his soul) in his sleeveless shirt.  But the contrast I’ll never forget.  I wanted to be at the downstairs party.

Tonight as Momo’s, albeit an upstairs venue, we had the grimy downstairs party goin on.

Haven’t been to World Music night yet?

I missed the 3 of the last 4 Tuesdays so made it a point to get there tonight.  Walked East on 6th starting around Hut’s Hamburgers and for some reason start counting the number of flat screen TVs showing basketball games.  Approaching Momo’s from what was Mother Egan’s (god rest it’s soul-closed as of last Wednesday)  I couldn’t help but think with this perfect sleep-with-yo-windows-open breeze,  I fully expect everyone to be sitting outside on the deck.

Nope.

The crowd was largely inside, and doing that downstairs party thing.  Couples pulled together and not just on the dance floor.  Folks were dancing right at the table.  Around the table.  Sweating.   Almost being inappropriate.  Smiling like they were on vacation.  The whole thing looked choreographed.  These were not people without rhythm.

And colorful. Not just skin color.  But clothes.  Even drinks.  There was a we shouldn’t be having this party cause the owner might find out kinda feel.

I stayed for a few hours.  Had a few El Tesoros.  Then had to get outta there cause I might start dancing and I didn’t have my sleeveless Swayze shirt on.

Maybe next Tuesday.
